Opening Reception Wednesday, Nov. 14
Tacoma, Wash. – University of Puget Sound’s Kittredge Gallery announces the 2012 Art Students Annual, on display from Nov. 12 to Dec. 8, 2012. The opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. Merit awards will be presented at 6 p.m. The reception is open to the university community, as well as the general public.
The Art Students Annual is a longstanding tradition for the Puget Sound art department. Any student currently enrolled at University of Puget Sound who has taken a studio class either on campus or in a study abroad program is eligible to enter the juried show; students are not required to be art majors.
Generally artworks submitted for the exhibition were created as part of class assignments or independent studies supervised by art faculty members. Studio courses offered by Puget Sound’s art department include painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, ceramic sculpture, and photography. The show presents an intriguing range of problem-solving approaches in a variety of media.
The juror for this year’s exhibition is Beverly Naidus, associate professor of interdisciplinary arts and sciences, University of Washington, Tacoma. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton College and her Master of Fine Arts degree from Nova Scotia College of Art & Design. She was associate professor of art at California State University, Long Beach, and facilitated courses at the Institute for Social Ecology in Vermont, and Hampshire College in Massachusetts, before joining the faculty of Goddard College.
Naidus's artwork deals with personal and social concerns, and ranges across media from site-specific installations to digitally rendered artist's books. Her work has been exhibited internationally and reviewed widely, including by The New York Times, Artforum, and Art in America.
Kittredge Gallery serves as a teaching tool for the art department and a cultural resource for both the university and the community at large, exhibiting work by noted regional and national artists. Exhibits and talks are free and open to the public. The gallery will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 21, through Sunday, Nov. 25, for Thanksgiving break.
