Pacific Rim Program

Now THAT'S journeying boldly!

PacRim Alumni

Once every three years a group of students from the University of Puget Sound ventures out into the world for nine months of rigorous academic and personal inquiry. Visiting eight Asian nations, the group engages in a vast multicultural experience that forces them to confront novel systems of culture, economics, politics, religion, and philosophy.

During Summer Reunion Weekend 2014, we celebrated 40 years of the PacRim tradition at Puget Sound with special gatherings and celebrations for alumni who share in the history of this unique program.

What do you remember about PacRim?

"There are a few things that I don't think I'll ever forget... like one of our first formal dinners in Korea... I was not an adventurous eater and there was something in the soup... a mussel? a snail? a clam? ... so I'm looking at it thinking, "I can't eat that", and then I think "well, I better eat that, who knows what else I'm going to have to eat this year"... I don't think I every told anyone that story, but it's clear as day in my head…"  Gretchen Richter de Medeiros '92

“The experiences on the Pac Rim trip and in the Honor's program were highlights of my time at UPS.” Jill Popowski ’88

“Dr. Albertson, he ran the Pacific Rim tour, a great man.” Theo Shreve-Russell '74

“The Pac-Rim experience has to rank as one of the best any student could ever have....[it] was a 9-month adventure!" Paul Uyehara '89

“Pacific Rim was the most beneficial life changing experience for me at UPS”  Michael Chappelle ’78
