The main thrust of Alva Butcher's scholarship is in the area of capital acquisition. In particular, she has studied alternative means of capital acquisition by firms, especially firms that are too small to be considered for a public offering by a syndicate of investment banks. She also is interested in executive compensation and strategic management in higher education.

In addition to the introductory course in finance, Principles of Financial Management, Dr. Butcher teaches Advanced Corporate Finance, International Finance, and the senior seminar in business.
