HIST 317

European Intellectual History: Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

This course explores the origins of the modern world-view in the rise of systems of ideas (and their associated political programs) - conservatism, liberalism, materialism, evolutionism, positivism, nihilism - which are the everyday currency of modern thought. The course explores the struggle of European thinkers to find some common foundation for action - in reason, in revelation, in history, or even in nature.
