History of China: 1600 to the Present

This course examines major trends in Chinese history between 1600 and the early 1990s. Beginning with the fall of the Ming dynasty and the founding of the Qing dynasty, the first half of the course explores the political, economic, social, and cultural trends of the last imperial dynasty. The second half of the course examines 20th -century China, from the turbulent years of the Republican period to the events of Tiananmen Square and beyond.
