ENGL 224

American Literature I

This course offers a survey of American literary history from its putative "beginnings" to the mid-nineteenth century. Interpreting literary works within their historical contexts, this course introduces students to a wide range of genres (such as poetry, the captivity narrative, the romance, the novel, and the manifesto) and cultural movements (such as Puritanism, the American Renaissance, Transcendentalism, sentimentalism, and reform).
