Tantra and Alchemy

This course is an introduction to the study of tantric and alchemical traditions in South and East Asia. Primarily focused on the rise and development of tantric teachings in Buddhism, the course examines the goals and practices of tantric adepts and virtuosi as expressed in the literature of tantric schools and systems. Topics considered include: advanced contemplative practices, antinomianism and transgressive dimensions of religious experience, subtle physiology, non-dual consciousness, and esotericism.

Prerequisites: REL 332, 333, or 334; or permission of the instructor.
