PHIL 215

Ancient Philosophy

A survey of the origins of Western philosophy in Ancient Greece, beginning with the Presocratics and covering Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Topics to be discussed include the origin and composition of the cosmos, the nature of divinity, the possibility and extent of human knowledge, the basis of morality, the nature of the soul and its relation to the body, the nature of love and friendship, the development of political theory, and the meaning of human life and excellence. Philosophical developments are examined against the background of historical changes, as well as pre-existing ancient Greek myth.
