The Politics of Community Engagement

This course in political theory prepares students for active participation in local politics. Students develop both a theoretical understanding of political participation and a set of practical skills to enable them to work actively within their communities. Through the study of theories of participation, power, and justice, students explore the ethical and political challenges of undertaking community and political organizing. At the same time, students gain practical skills for undertaking community engagement work; they have real opportunities to communicate with diverse community partners on issues of mutual concern, to conduct power analysis, and to identify strategies for political engagement.
