Puget Sound Application

All Puget Sound students applying for study abroad programs approved for the transfer of credit must meet the published pre-requisites for the program and be in good academic, conduct, and financial standing. Completion of this form gives International Programs permission to verify a student's eligibility to apply for study abroad.

Submission Deadline: February 1, 2013

This form may be submitted as early as August 1, 2012. Applications received after February 1st will not be accepted.

You will receive an email message within a few weeks of the February 1st deadline noting if you have been approved to apply for a study abroad program. You cannot move forward in the process until you receive approval from Puget Sound.

Pac Rim & Earlham Waseda

If you are applying for the Pac Rim or Earlham Waseda programs, do not complete this application. Instead, complete the Pac Rim specific application or the Earlham Waseda application.

Students applying for multiple terms

If you are applying for multiple terms (i.e. Summer and Fall, etc.), you only need to complete one application.

Required Application Essays

The study abroad application process is competitive. The committee expects you to make a strong academic argument in support of your preferred program.
Puget Sound requires two separate essays as part of the application process. These required essays are a major part of the application process and are thoroughly reviewed based on:

1. Academic, intellectual, and/or career goals
2. Informed interest in the culture and/or country

Strong essays will include research and citations. Essays should be double-spaced in the range of 300 words.

You may submit the Puget Sound Application without attaching your essays, but in order for your application to be complete you must submit your essays to International Programs by February 1. Please email them to snoss@pugetsound.edu.

Essay 1: Program
Which features of the host institution or program advance your goals (e.g. theme, course offerings, internships, cultural activities, etc.)? How? Go beyond how the courses fulfill requirements to informed interest in the actual subject matter. Which features create challenges and how will you meet those?
Essay 2: Country and Culture
Why have you chosen your particular country and culture? Why do you want to engage with Chileans? Kiwis? South Africans in their country? Are there aspects of the Japanese economy, British literature, Indian foreign policy, or Spanish psychology that fascinate you? Are there environmental or human rights struggles in Morocco or Thailand you want to learn more about? Are there ecosystems or organisms unique to the location?
