On why I chose Puget Sound: I chose Puget Sound partly because it’s near my hometown in Oregon, but also because I was looking for a small liberal arts school with a strong music program, and Puget Sound is exactly that!

Favorite thing about Puget Sound and the School of Music: My favorite thing about the School of Music is that it’s a very tightly knit community. Most everybody knows each other, which I think is important in fostering an environment where we are comfortable and have the opportunity to grow with one another as young, developing musicians.

Favorite classes:

  • “Elementary German” (GER 101) with Jennifer Colosimo - I really loved this class partly because learning German is really helpful when attempting to sing in the language, but also because I feel like learning another language should be a fundamental part of any education. German is a beautiful and complex language, and Frau Colosimo, while being one of my favorite professors here, goes above and beyond to help her students learn quickly and sufficiently.
  • “Diction for Singers” (MUS 235) with Dawn Padula - I mostly loved this class because I found it to be very applicable to what I am majoring in, but also because Dr. Padula is such a great professor to work with and learn from. We learned about the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and how to apply it to different languages correctly, and we also had coaching sessions in class to see how what we’re learning applies to singing.

Favorite musical memory at Puget Sound: So far, my favorite memory has been singing in Opera Scenes, where I got to sing in a scene from Die Zauberflöte (Mozart) as the Third Lady. This was the first time I have sang opera literature in a real stage setting, and since I enjoyed it so much I know I must have declared the right major! I also immensely enjoyed singing in the Fauré Requiem, which I think is one of my favorite choral works. It’s absolutely stunning!

Favorite place on campus: My favorite place on campus is outside on the grass in the quad on a sunny day. Campus is so beautiful and any chance I have to take it all in is worth every moment!
