Ensemble Placement Auditions

All incoming and returning students will audition in the fall for ensembles and ensemble placement. Audition requirements and sign-up sheets for all auditions are on the bulletin board outside of the School of Music Office, Music Bldg., Room 111. Audition slots fill quickly, so those who sign up earlier rather than later will have a broader selection of times.

String Auditions: Symphony Orchestra

The audition consists of excerpts chosen by the conductor as well as a five-minute selection of your choice from your solo repertoire.  Excerpts available through the School of Music website.

String Excerpts: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass

Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion Auditions

The auditions for woodwind and brass instruments consists of a prepared solo of your choice, chromatic scale demonstrating the range of your instrument, and sight-reading.

Auditions for percussion will take place following a mandatory percussion meeting.  Please note: Percussionists should also plan to sign up for a time slot on the “woodwinds and brass” audition sign-up sheet to speak with Professor Morris one-on-one.

WIND ENSEMBLE: The audition will consist of three required solos: one each on snare drum, timpani and marimba.  The solos are posted on the School of Music website: percussion excerpts (mallets, snare drum, timpani).  Sight reading will also be required.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: Audition required. Orchestra placements will be determined by the Wind Ensemble audition.

Concert Band does not require an audition.

Jazz Band

The audition consists of two contrasting excerpts, one fast and one slow, in jazz style. You will also be required to sight-read. If you are interested in improvising, be prepared to demonstrate your ability.

Choral and Musical Theatre Production Auditions

Adelphian Concert Choir, Dorian Singers, Voci d'Amici:
Audition required

Please bring a prepared solo (art song, hymn, aria, folk song) if you have one. If you do not have a prepared solo there will be sample patriotic songs and hymns available to sing at the audition. Auditions are required for membership in Adelphian Concert Choir, Dorian Singers, and Voci d'Amici.

Chorale does not require an audition. If you are interested in joining Chorale, you must attend the first rehearsal.

Musical Theatre production:  Auditions for the musical theatre production will take place in November.  Please note: once every three years, we collaborate with the Theatre Arts department on a musical; other years we produce an opera, operetta, or an opera scenes recital.  Watch for notices and postings about audition dates and times.  The musical rehearsals will begin in January (repertoire TBA), and the performance dates are March 1, 2 and 7-10.  Performances will be in the Norton Clapp Theater.
