Henry Luce Foundation
In 2002 the University of Puget Sound was awarded $560,000 by the Henry Luce Foundation to support an Environmental Policy and Decision Making Initiative. This grant funded a new tenure-line faculty position specializing in U.S. environmental policy and decision making, now held by Dr. Daniel Sherman, as well as numerous regional conferences, workshops, and programs designed to link the university's academic and co-curricular opportunities to environmental stakeholders in the south Puget Sound region. This initiative is now coordinated through the Sound Policy Institute at the university.
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
In 2008 the University of Puget Sound was awarded $525,000 by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support a new tenure-line faculty position specializing in international environmental policy and decision making. Rachel DeMotts joined the faculty in the Fall of 2009 as the new Mellon Assistant Professor of Global Environmental Politics. This grant also provided funds for complementary student research stipends, faculty curriculum development, as well as conferences and workshops that brought students, faculty, and environmental stakeholders together to address pressing international environmental issues. The work conducted under this grant supported and enriched the development of both the Environmental Policy and Decision Making program as well as the Sound Policy Institute.
The Russell Family Foundation
The University of Puget Sound has been the recipient of two Environmental Sustainability grants, totaling $60,000, from the Russell Family Foundation to develop campus-community partnerships for waste reduction. These grants led to the formation of a campus-community Waste Reduction Task Force, a model for campus-community partnerships around sustainability issues, a method for prioritizing and monitoring sustainability initiatives, social marketing strategies to promote waste reduction behaviors, events designed to raise public awareness of best practices for waste reduction, and the integration of sustainability broadly across the university curriculum.
The Washington Center for Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Education
The University of Puget Sound is one of eight institutions of higher education receiving seed money from the Washington Center for Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Education to integrate sustainability with 'Big Ideas' in the disciplines. This grant supports summer curriculum workshops designed to help faculty find links between their fields of teaching and ideas central to understanding environmental sustainability.
