Empty Bottles

Empty reagent bottles could be very dangerous if not cleaned out before disposing them, and some of them are regulated. And the bottle must be taken off the chemical inventory.

They can not go into the trash!

Rinse them out with acetone or dichloromethane, pending solubility, and log the solvent used and the compound onto the appropriate log sheet for Acetone or Halogenated Wastes. Rinse at least once.

If the empty bottle is a P-Listed Material: Rinse them out with acetone or dichloromethane, pending solubility, and log the solvent used and the compound onto the appropriate log sheet for Acetone or Halogenated Wastes. Rinse at least THREE times — this is a regulatory requirement.

Use labeling tape and write "MT & rinsed" on it, and place the tape somewhere on the bottle so it will not cover the label or the inventory number — this is important!

Give the bottle to the Storeroom - put it into the wash room (303) - and the bottle will be logged off the chemical inventory as empty.

If you have any doubts about what you are doing, please contact the Storeroom Manager.
