Certifications & Endorsements
Washington has established a new standard for what all teachers should know. The governor, legislature, state board of education, and superintendent of public instruction proposed a uniform means of assessing basic skill competency for all teaching candidates statewide. Washington joins 45 other states that currently require a basic skills test. Passage of all three subsections (reading writing and math) of the Washington Educator Skills Test- Basic, or WEST-B, is required for admission to the M.A.T. program. Out of state applicants may substitute either CBEST or Praxis I scores with preapproval.
As of September 2009 all candidates seeking an endorsement to a new or existing Washington teaching certificate will be required to take the WEST- E assessments and meet the minimum passing score(s) for their chosen endorsement area. The tests will be required for entry into our Master of Arts in Teaching program. The University of Puget Sound also requires all candidates for a secondary endorsement to hold the minimum of a minor (or its credit equivalent: 5 units/20 semester credits/30 quarter credits) in the desired subject area.
