Thinking about teaching math?

One part of preparing to teach math is a strong preparation in the subject. The best content preparation is a major in math. If you are unable to major in math you can still teach math if you prepare carefully.

You must demonstrate your subject-matter knowledge in two ways prior to your admission to the M.A.T. program.

  1. You must pass the Washington Educator Skills Test—Endorsements (WEST-E) in math.
  2. You must also have taken coursework that prepares you for teaching secondary math.  This generally means at least 5 Puget Sound units in math.  These units should include:
    1. Math 150: Finite Mathematics
    2. Math 300: Geometry
    3. Math 170 or 180: Calculus
