Notes on using online databases

As of 19 July 2010, latlong data from HerpNET and ORNIS projects wre loaded onto the server. 

As of 1 April 2010 our server is functional through MaNIS, HerpNet, ORNIS, VertNet and GBIF portals.  For more information, contact gshugart@pugetsound.edu.  Gary Shugart.

Timeouts and retrieving records from online databases.  VertNet has all vertebrates and does not time out when all institutions are queried unlike MaNIS, ORNIS, or HerpNET which can be used to query mammals, birds or herps, respectively.  To retrieve data for download to Excel, on the search page click the "Full specimen results set", blank out the number of records retreived, which sets the default to all, then select download data on the result screen. Note that some institutions have a limit on the number of records that can be retrieved.

For searches on scientific name, use the contains operator rather than equals because the subspecies is included in the scientific name and equal will only retrieve those records that do not have subspecies.  (Note added Nov 2009, G. Shugart)

The portals do not appear to work with Google Chrome browser unless the cache (browsing data; Tools>Options) is continually cleared as of 5 Apr 2010 (G. Shugart)
