Generally speaking, most instructors require regular attendance because participation in class is an essential part of the learning process. If a student has a disability that may involve absences, the student should request an accommodation of flexibility in attendance at the beginning of each semmester through Disability Services. The extent of flexibility is determined by the professor based on the nature of the course and the academic standards of the course. When a student requests flexibility in attendance from Disability Services, the director will determne is this is a reasonable accommodation. The student will be given a Flexibility Attendance Agreement which will assist the professor and student in determining the maximun number of absences allowed for the course and to clarify communication expectations. If a student is absent frequently or for an extended period of time due to illness or injury, he or she should notify the instructor and discuss whether or not continuation in the class is feasible.
Students are never required to disclose the nature of the disability to the professor.
The university attendance policy is stated in The Logger under the Registration section:
"Regular class attendance is expected of all students. Absence from class for any reason does not excuse the student from completing all course assignments. When non-attendance is in the instructor's judgement excessive, the instructor may levy a grade penalty or may direct the registrar to drop the student from the course.
Moreover, when non-attendance is excessive, as described in the above paragraph, in all of a student's academic courses, the student is considered to have voluntarily withdrawn from school and the Registrar will inform the student that he or she is disenrolled under this policy. Once dropped from all courses, the student is required to leave campus. Students who are so disenrolled will normally receive "WF" grades."
