The goal of the Center for Writing, Learning, and Teaching is to help students become better, more independent writers. Writing Advisors serve as experienced peer readers and feedback providers to students who are working on drafts of papers from across the disciplines, at any stage in the writing process. Writing advisors also assist faculty and students in first-year seminars, helping to lead workshops and to provide student feedback on writing and writing assignments.
Weekly workload includes about 6 scheduled hours in the CWLT and about an hour of liaison work with first-year seminars. Writing advisors participate in ongoing training and professional development with an intellectually and socially engaged team of peers at the CWLT.
Writing Advisor positions are open to students with at least a 3.3 G.P.A. The CWLT values international travel, and a student’s plans to study abroad does not prevent their application from being considered; however, students must be on campus during the Fall 2017 semester to take CWLT 300 (a quarter-unit course) and to participate in CWLT orientation. Preference will be given to rising juniors and seniors, though we will consider exceptional rising sophomores.
We actively seek a diverse team of writers to work in the CWLT because we believe that it broadens perspectives on how to define good writing and effective learning, creates a community where more students feel represented, comfortable, and safe, and reflects the kind of campus we aspire to be. We encourage students to apply who have not always seen themselves as the “best” writers in their classes, but who have gained confidence in themselves through the support of professors and peers. The best tutors aren’t necessarily those who have always found school to be easy—often, they are students who have had to learn difficult lessons for themselves and are able to coach and encourage others more effectively as a result.
Writing Advisors blend strong writing skills and academic growth with empathy for others and the ability to connect. They must collaborate well with diverse peers, faculty, and staff. They must be organized, responsible, and able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Finally, they must have a positive attitude about writing, an understanding of the major concepts of English grammar, a strong sense of integrity, and the ability to listen well to others. Prior tutoring experience is not required.
All students applying for Peer Writing Advisor positions should submit an application to CWLT Director Professor Julie Christoph at the Center for Writing, Learning, and Teaching, Howarth 105, by Friday, February 10, 2017 at 5 pm. The application consists of the following materials:

We will contact finalists for group semifinalist and individual finalist interviews before spring break.
Students studying abroad in Spring ’17 may apply and interview early, before they leave; otherwise, we will contact semifinalists for an individual Skype interview.
