New Temporary Social Sciences Librarian: Laura Schick
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Laura Schick as the Temporary Social Sciences Liaison Librarian. Ms. Schick will provide library reference, instruction, and collection development services in the areas of Business and Leadership, Economics, International Political Economy, and Comparative Sociology. Ms. Schick is a recent graduate of the University of Washington's Information School. While obtaining her master's degree, Ms. Schick worked at the UW's Odegaard Undergraduate Library as a Graduate Staff Assistant in Reference and Instruction, where she provided research help and library instruction sessions across a wide variety of disciplines. She gained experience in different types of libraries as an intern at the Ballard branch of the Seattle Public Library, and later at Meany Middle School in Seattle's Central District, although her first passion is working with students and faculty in academic libraries.
Ms. Schick has also worked as a story time volunteer for Page Ahead, an organization that serves at-risk children to promote early literacy. She presented at the annual Washington Library Association Conference in both 2008 and 2009 as part of the program, "Booktalking the Best," sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for new young adult literature with other librarians.
Ms. Schick earned her Bachelor's degree from Willamette University with a double major in English and Mathematics. When asked what most excites her about joining the UPS community, she says, "I know firsthand the value of a liberal arts education. I'm looking forward to cultivating relationships with the students and faculty here, in an environment where students are challenged to ask difficult questions and make new discoveries."
