The Why Bottled Water campaign is a partnership of Students for a Sustainable Campus (SSC), Associated Students of University of Puget Sound (ASUPS), Sustainability Advisory Committee (SAC), and Puget Sound’s Dining and Conference Services who together are working to decrease the number of single-use plastic water bottles sold in the Diner. Instead encouraging students and the extended community to reduce waste by drinking tap water.
Goals of the Why Bottled Water Campaign:
Why Reduce Plastic Waste?
The Why Bottled campaign aims to reduce both the materials used in the production of water bottles, as well as the increasing volume in landfills. The production of plastic water bottles in the U.S. alone creates 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas responsible for global warming (EPA). By eliminating plastic waste sent to the landfill, the amount of petroleum used in the production of plastic bottles is reduced. Single-use plastic water bottles rely on scarce and petroleum within manufacturing. Not only is the production of plastic water bottles unsustainable, but increases waste in landfills. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, as garbage slowly decomposes in a landfill it releases methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.
Why Refillable Bottles?
Reusing or purchasing a stainless steel water bottle ensures that you are diminishing your reliance on petroleum and methane footprint from the landfill. If you choose to buy a plastic water bottle, make sure to recycle the bottle after use. Americans empty 2.5 million plastic water bottles an hour. Each one takes 500 million years to decompose (EPA).
Why Tap Water?
Drinking tap water not only reduces one’s reliance on plastic, but is a healthy and sustainable option. Tap water is a safer, cheaper, and often healthier option compared to single-use plastic water bottles. Consuming tap water reduces the reliance for petroleum in production and wasted space in landfills.
The University of Puget Sound Kayak Club supports the “Why Bottled Water” Campaign. We see plastic bottles all too often on the rivers around Washington. By reducing our bottled waste we can help keep ours waterways clean for not only public consumption but also for sustainable recreation.
Ocean Intellect believes the why in Why Bottled Water is not simply enough. We as people must take a stance to stop abusive plastics. The natural beauty of this world is harmed everyday with the heavy influence of chemical toxins leaching from plastics in oceans, rivers, and dry land. To witness the plastic debris within a sea bird's stomach is enough for me to know that change is needed. Ocean Intellect supports such change. We believe in living simply, not living in denial.
