The College:  “The University of Puget Sound is a bright spot on the map of American higher education. Students searching for thoughtful professors, a lively interdisciplinary vibe, friendly classmates, and a beautiful setting ought to add the university to their short lists.”  –Colleges That Change Lives

The University of Puget Sound was founded in 1888 and, over the past 30 years, has reaffirmed its mission as a national liberal arts college.  Puget Sound has continued to become more selective in its admission process, and has developed a strong sense of residential community through its unique and varied residential opportunities.   Puget Sound is one of only five nationally ranked independent undergraduate liberal arts colleges in the Pacific Northwest, along with Whitman, Willamette, Lewis & Clark and Reed.  The college’s 2,600 students come from nearly every state in the nation and all over the world; they represent a wide variety of socioeconomic, ethnic and political backgrounds, and are passionate about academic inquiry, social justice, global citizenship, outdoor adventure, the arts, scientific research, athletics, and sustainable living.

A 12-to-1 student-faculty ratio provides Puget Sound students with personal attention from faculty who have a strong commitment to teaching and offer 1,200 courses each year in more than 50 traditional and interdisciplinary fields, including graduate programs in occupational therapy, physical therapy and education. New programs added in the past five years include: global development studies; biochemistry; molecular and cellular biology; neuroscience; Asian languages and cultures; and Latino Studies. Popular and distinctive programs also include a School of Business and Leadership, and a conservatory-caliber School of Music. Professors are first and foremost teachers, and have been awarded more Washington Professor of the Year honors from the Carnegie Foundation than any other college. In addition to vast curricular offerings, Puget Sound fields 23 varsity sports (11 men’s and 12 women’s teams) that compete in the NCAA Division III Northwest Conference.

The market value of Puget Sound’s endowment is approximately $280 million and the college’s 97-acre Tudor-Gothic campus, named one of the nation’s most beautiful by The Princeton Review, has seen extensive changes with major renovations and new buildings added in recent years.
