How To Resize or Crop an Image In Photoshop

* Photoshop is available in select computer labs on campus, including Library 034.

To help ensure that your order meets your specifications, please check that the file you send us matches the final size you'd like printed.  Please be sure your file is saved as a PDF when you place your order.


To resize an image in Photoshop:

  1. Open your image in Photoshop.
  2. Go to “Image”, located at the top of the window.
  3. Select “Image Size”.
  4. A new window will open.
  5. To maintain the proportions of your image, click the box next to “Constrain Proportions”.
  6. Under “Document Size”:
    1. Select “inches” for the unit of measurement.
    2. Check that the resolution is no lower than “200 pixels/inch”, however “300 pixels/inch” is ideal for printing.
    3. Input the width and height you desire.
    4. If your original image has different proportions than your desired print size, it will be necessary to crop your image after resizing it (see below).
    5. Click “OK”.
  7. Save your file.
    • Tip!  If you want to keep your original file, select “Save As” and name your image something different from the original.

To crop an image in Photoshop:

  1. Open your image in Photoshop.
  2. Resize your image as needed (see above). ). Do not make any of the dimensions of your document any smaller than your desired finished size.  In this example, the desired finished size is 5" x 7".
  3. Go to “Image”, located at the top of the window.
  4. Select “Canvas Size”.
  5. A new window will open.
  6. Select “inches” for the unit of measurement
  7. Input the width and height you desire.
  8. Click “OK”.
    • You will receive a warning stating that you are reducing your canvas to a size that’s smaller than your current canvas size.  Since the whole point is to crop your image, this is what you want.
    • Click “Proceed”.
  9. Save your file.
    • Tip!  If you want to keep your original (uncropped) file, select “Save As” and name your image something different from the original.
