Elizabeth Paterson teaches applied bassoon lessons and bassoon techniques class. She moved west from Michigan in 1976 when she joined the 724th Air Force Band of the Pacific Northwest at McChord AFB. She traveled extensively playing with the Concert Band, Marching Band, Wind Quintet and singing with the Jazz Band. After leaving the band in 1980 she completed her BME from Pacific Lutheran University and her MMus is from the University of Washington. She has studied with Bruce Grainger, Terry Ewell, and Seth Krimsky.
Ms. Paterson has been active as a music educator. She has taught in Tacoma public schools, as well as maintaining a private studio in bassoon. She managed the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra’s education program, “Simply Symphonic,” and has developed a special library program called “Maestra Melody” which explores the elements of music for young children. Ms. Paterson has been active as a woodwind instructor and coach for the Tacoma Youth Symphony. She is a founding member of the Trio d’anches Northwest. Ms. Paterson plays in the Tacoma Symphony, Tacoma Opera, Tacoma City Ballet and Oregon Ballet Theatre, and freelances with many groups including Bellevue Philharmonic, Northwest Sinfonietta, Northwest Chamber Orchestra, and Spokane Symphony. She also has been a guest speaker, adjudicator and clinician at middle and high schools, colleges and libraries.
