Puget Sound is a founding member of the Nationwide Internships Consortium (NIC), a group of national liberal arts institutions that share internship resources, providing students access to thousands of internship opportunities across the county. Shared database listings reside in a web-based, searchable tool—InternshipLink.
NIC partners with the Liberal Arts Career Network (LACN) to further expand the available opportunities. Students can take advantage of the employer relationships cultivated by Puget Sound's Career and Employment Services (CES) team, and also by those cultivated by NIC and LACN member institutions across the country.
Both NIC and LACN post internships that are paid, unpaid, for credit, and not-for-credit. Many of the top industries represented are those that Puget Sound students express an interest in: nonprofit, communications/media, arts and entertainment, environment, consulting, and health care, among others.
The majority of NIC member colleges are on the West Coast and in the Northeast, while the majority of LACN member schools are in the Northeast, Midwest, and South. Not only do students have access to a broad range of local and regional internship opportunities that they can take advantage of while school is in session, but they also have expanded resources to draw on if they leave the area during the summer, or after graduation.
In combination with InternshipLink’s sister database, LoggerJobs, students have access to a wide variety of jobs and internships. Employers seek out candidates with work experience, whether that be gained in part-time or summer jobs, or through internship positions. Part-time jobs and internships are both excellent avenues for gaining skills that can be translated into marketable experience and for developing professional networking contacts.
