The 25 Rules of Considerate Conduct

Think Twice Before Asking Favors. Give Constructive Criticism. Refrain from Idle Complaints. Don’t Shift Responsibility and Blame. These are only four of the 25 Rules of Considerate Conduct, outlined in Choosing Civility, a book by Dr. P.M. Forni, the founder of the John Hopkins Civility Project. Explore this simple yet remarkable book, the basic rules of civility, and why being civil helps us to communicate effectively with others at home, at work, and in our daily interactions.

About the facilitator: Cindy Matern is the associate vice president of Human Resources and Career and Employment Services.

Communal Cooking

Some of our best memories are formed in the kitchen with friends and family.  Food and its preparation are at the heart of many of our most cherished memories.  This class will focus on the preparation of food as entertainment for friends and family with the goal of creating new memories.  The class will cover topics ranging from pizza preparation (both from scratch and using store-bought crusts) to sushi to how to infuse spirits for cocktails.  The class will feature numerous demonstrations and plenty of tasty treats to try.

About the facilitators:

Andrew Riedmueller, chef in Dining and Conference Services, began working in kitchens at fifteen and has kept at it ever since.  He joined the university in 2010 and has found the campus to be a wonderful environment in which to work.  His strengths include Southern fare and Italian.  In his personal time, he is devoted to his two dogs, Neko and Loki.

Chandra Sims, sous chef in Dining and Conference Services, has worked for the university since 2002.  She has worked her way through the kitchen, including the Vegan Station, where she helped achieve 6 awards in 6 years for “Most Vegan Friendly Colleges.”  Chandra enjoys working with the culinary team here at Puget Sound and believes strongly in continuous professional and personal development.

And for more development and enrichment in spring term:

Join the campus Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service! For five years, Puget Sound students, faculty and staff have taken “a day on” to help community agencies and individuals in need. On January 21, 2013, join other members of the Puget Sound community for an afternoon in service to the greater Tacoma community. Following the projects, join others for a simple meal of soup and bread in the Rotunda to reflect on the service projects and celebrate Keep Living the Dream Award recipients. To sign up or learn more about service sites, send an email message to mlk@pugetsound.edu, or call extension 3317.

Financial consultants from TIAA-CREF will visit us in February to present a session on making your retirement contribution allocations so you can get the most out of your Puget Sound sponsored retirement plan. This will include making transfers from your TIAA-CREF legacy funds into the currently available fund lineup. Watch your e-mail for more information.
