Dean of Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer

The Dean of Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) reports to the Academic Vice President, and works closely with the President, the Academic Vice President, members of the President’s Cabinet (senior leadership), and campus faculty, staff, and students to provide leadership for diversity related initiatives and institutional efforts of the campus. The primary role of the Dean and CDO is to explore and strategize ways to improve organizational culture and broader campus community’s quality of life for faculty, staff, and students. The Dean/CDO oversees the functions of the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, and is charged with developing and implementing effective diversity policies and practices, including: strategic diversity plans; recruitment and retention of diverse faculty and staff; recruitment and retention of a diverse student body; the cultivation of a welcoming and inclusive campus community; and leadership, resource, and infrastructure development.

The Dean/CDO is charged with serving the educational mission of the institution and carrying out Puget Sound’s diversity vision and statement. Primary goals of the Dean include:

  • Coordinating implementation of the university’s strategic plan for diversity, including developing, planning, coordinating, implementing, and assessing diversity operational and strategic goals
  • Continuous monitoring of the environment, regular assessment and evaluation, and development of additional resources as required
  • Helping to plan, coordinate, implement, and assess operational and strategic goals related to diversity
  • Engaging campus efforts to welcome and sustain a diverse campus community in order achieve understanding of diversity as integral to liberal arts education
  • Overseeing and providing program leadership and support for Access and achievement programs
  • Serving as University’s AA Officer and Title IX Officer
  • Infusing diversity into the most important academic issues and areas of the institution
  • Coordinating and synergizing diversity efforts across the campus


The Dean/CDO serves as a member of the university dean’s academic leadership team, the college’s academic deans, and the president’s LEAD group. The Dean/CDO also collaborates with faculty to develop inclusive teaching and learning strategies and resources, and works closely with faculty, professional staff, and students to identify, coordinate, and provide professional development opportunities aimed at engaging the campus community in meaningful and thoughtful conversations intended to advance and realize an equitable working environment and inclusive learning community. The Dean/CDO chairs and oversees the Diversity Advisory Council (DAC), Bias-Hate Education and Response Team (BHERT), and Accessibility Working Group (AWG); serves on the Faculty Committee on Diversity (CoD), the Retention Committee, the Harassment Response Team, and additional committees; works in concert with the  Sexual Assault Working Group (SAWG), and continuously seeks to cultivate relationships beyond the campus to open reciprocal opportunities for Puget Sound students and its Tacoma neighbors.
