Kittredge Gallery

Kittredge Gallery serves as a teaching tool for the Puget Sound Art Department and supports the liberal arts curriculum of the university as a whole through gallery exhibitions and artist lectures focused on expanding students' exposure to core issues in the visual arts. Kittredge Gallery also contributes to the broader cultural community of the Pacific Northwest through exhibitions by regional and nationally recognized artists.

The gallery is housed in Kittredge Hall near the northeast edge of campus and is comprised of two exhibition spaces, the Large and Small Galleries. Shows rotate every six to eight weeks from late August through May. Gallery exhibitions and artist lectures are free and open to the public. Kittredge Gallery is wheelchair accessible.

Gathering Image, Fugitive Form

Large and Small Galleries

Gathering Image, Fugitive Form is comprised of paintings by four
Northwest artists who work on the edge of an evolving image.
Helen O’Toole, Eric Elliott, Danila Rumold and Mary Ann Peters
celebrate the moment—the appearance—of representation in a
process and an experience that emerges through abstraction.
If Helen O'Toole’s works are heavily pregnant with the promise of
an impending image that never fully arrives, Danila Rumold
reveals the image as a liminal memory—almost a staining of the
retina as it might emerge at night when we close our eyes. Mary
Ann Peters’ surface serves as a metaphor for the mind as she
teases her image from the substrate—melting even as it is made.
Eric Elliott’s masses and quiet air are redolent with tangible
floating volumes that falter on the cusp of dissipation into a
cumulative field of marks and surface.
Forever gathering together and falling apart, these aggregated
images constantly make and unmake themselves. In this
continuous state of becoming, each painting unfolds as an
individual and unending event.
